Using humor to communicate effectively with citizens
The City of Brossard wanted to stand out in the way it connected with citizens on social media. It was looking for short, friendly videos with a playful tone to deliver important messages in a fresh and engaging way. The series was required to address three key objectives set by the client: encouraging proper recycling and composting habits, helping recruit students for the City’s summer jobs, and raising awareness about the need to move parked cars during snow removal operations.
This project gave 2 Square Films the perfect opportunity to let its creative instincts run free—blending storytelling flair with a deep understanding of the communications, political, and social realities of a major city. With humor as a central pillar, we designed a five-part series, where humor is sparked by the subtle ambiguity of everyday situations.
“Choose the Right Bin!” takes the form of a mockumentary. A man with a blurred-out face gives a deadpan interview about his chaotic relationship with his trash bins. Much like unruly pets, they refuse to obey. When he approaches with leftovers, the bins stay stubbornly shut—yet somehow, his daughter manages to get them to open without a hitch.
To maximize impact and reach, the videos were produced in vertical and square formats—ideal for mobile viewing and highly shareable on social media platforms.
Each episode delivers a clear, civic-minded message wrapped in humor and subtle storytelling. The tone is accessible, clever, and memorable—striking the right balance between institutional communication and entertainment.
By embracing modern codes and formats, the City of Brossard was able to engage its audience more authentically, with content designed to be watched, shared… and smiled at.
“Choose the right bin!” stars actor Mario Bélanger and Alexane Outhenthapanya as his daughter.

To heighten the comedic effect, we filmed the scene from across the street—just like a nosy neighbor would.
This shadowy setup nods to crime documentaries—except here, the only mystery is his struggle with a recycling bin.

And this episode, a deliberately ambiguous father-son conversation tiptoes the line between civic responsibility and innuendo. The father awkwardly tries to explain why his son must move the car in winter… while the subtext suggests he might be talking about something else entirely. Mario Bélanger plays the father, his son is played by Sean Liu-Stafford.
In this student recruitment episode, young people are told upfront: if you’re looking for flat, boring jobs, look elsewhere! This vignette was designed to help attract new summer camp animators—with energy and humor.
