A nationwide production celebrating bilingualism
Ministers’ Council on the Canadian Francophonie (MCCF) recognized that there is still work to be done for French to fully take its place within Canadian society. To show just how far the French language can take you, the MCCF set out to produce a video series aimed at the general public — with a focus on unilingual English-speaking Canadians.
Learning a language isn’t just a strategic decision — it’s an emotional one, often tied to culture, identity, and personal experience. To spark that emotional connection, our creative team proposed an approach centered on real-life storytelling.
Each video features an inspiring Canadian public servant sharing how French entered their life — sometimes in unexpected ways — and how it shaped their personal and professional journey. We also introduced the idea of a second, meaningful person — a colleague, friend, or family member — to embody the human connection made possible through language, and to echo the theme of transmission.
Casting was conducted nationwide from our base in Montreal. For production, we implemented a collaborative model: local crews filmed on-site, guided remotely by our Montreal-based directors. Postproduction was completed entirely in-house, supported by a secure and efficient media-sharing system.
The project led to the creation of 13 short, powerful and inspiring video capsules — one for each province and territory in Canada. Each video runs about three minutes and features a public servant sharing their personal and professional connection to the French language, with honesty and emotion.
Thanks to the diversity of voices, the depth of the stories and the quality of the production, the series struck a chord and helped strengthen the presence of French across Canada. To extend the campaign’s impact, the MCCF launched a dedicated website, supported by a multi-platform distribution strategy and a range of practical resources for those interested in learning French.

In Saskatoon, the crew refines framing and lighting with Jason Quiliam, Chief of Protocol for the Government of Saskatchewan, then sends the image to Montreal—where the director ensures every detail meets 2 Square Films’ high standards of quality and consistency.

During the COVID-19 health crisis, the MCCF wanted to reaffirm the importance of bilingual communication in emergency situations. We developed a three-part video capsule: a short, humorous scene about miscommunication, a playful exercise that challenges assumptions, and a documentary-style segment highlighting the life-saving role of bilingualism.
The video is now used as an educational tool in an online course on crisis communication, developed in partnership with the MCCF and the Université de Moncton.
