Context

The RASC Cardiovascular Health Action Network  developed the “Approach 180” program, designed to treat and prevent childhood obesity. During consultations, physicians often sketched little characters on a sheet of paper—drawn upside down so young patients could follow along—to explain how sugar is digested. While engaging, this method had its limits.

That’s when the idea emerged: turn these explanations into an animated short film that would be more captivating, easier to understand, and memorable for children. The film could be shown on an iPad while they waited to meet their doctor. From this initiative, Léo was born—a character created to guide children in understanding their health.

Strategy

The script, playful in tone, was crafted by 2SQ’s team of screenwriters in close collaboration with the Approach 180 medical team to ensure scientific accuracy. The creative team then designed the main character and his sidekicks—the magician and the spy—while developing a colorful and engaging visual universe.

The animation brought this story to life, designed to capture and sustain the attention of young viewers by incorporating pedagogical concepts tailored to the interests and comprehension level of 10- to 15-year-olds. This approach turned a complex scientific notion into a clear, engaging, and effective educational tool.

Léo was imagined with the support of AI tools, while the animation and backgrounds were produced through traditional techniques, blending innovation with craftsmanship.

Results

Produced in five languages—French, English, Cree, Atikamekw, and Innu—the animation quickly became a valuable educational tool for the clinic. It is now used during consultations with children and their families. It is also integrated into presentations for healthcare professionals, and shared across the organization’s digital platforms.

While it was initially designed to connect specifically with 10- to 15-year-olds, the video has proven equally relevant and impactful for a much broader audience.
